  PROFILE

Peter Wall was signed by Bill Shankly from Wrexham in October 1966 and had the reputation of being a reliable full-back.

He arrived in a J26,000 package deal that also included fellow full-back Stuart Mason and was inevitably christened 'Max' by players and supporters alike.

However, his arrival coincided with one of the most settled sides Liverpool had ever possessed and Wall found it hard to displace 1965 FA Cup Final hero Gerry Byrne for the left back berth.

It wasn't until March 1968 that Bill Shankly gave him his debut in a 3-2 home win over Burnley. Gerry Byrne's playing days were almost at an end and Wall was given a chance until being replaced by the versatile Geoff Strong.

He did play nine consecutive League games in the middle of the 1969-70 season but that period also included the dreadful F.A. Cup defeat at Second Division Watford, after which Shankly realised that it was time to make changes and build for the future.

Wall left Anfield for Crystal Palace in May 1970 and the J350,000 spent by the Eagles proved to be money well spent on their part as he served the Selhurst Park club for a further eight years.
