  PROFILE

UEFA Cup Final 2001  Dutchman Sander Westerveld became the most expensive goalkeeper in British football when he joined the Reds for a reported fee of ?4 million during the summer of 1999.

Having begun his career with FC Twente in Holland, he then joined Vitesse Arnhem, whom he helped qualify for Europe during the 1998-99 season, before making his dream move to Liverpool.

The giant keeper was Gerard Houllier's first choice to succeed David James as Anfield's number one, and Westerveld fully justified the manager's confidence by playing a leading role in Liverpool's return to Europe, and conceding the least number of goals in the 1999-2000 Premiership season.

His fine form was rewarded with a place in the Dutch squad that reached the semi-finals at Euro 2000. He made three appearances (two as substitute) and impressed in the 2-1 group victory over eventual champions France.

This season Westerveld's impressive progress has continued and he emerged the hero of Liverpool's Worthington Cup Final victory over Birmingham City, making the match winning save from Andy Johnson in the penalty shoot-out. He also played an integral part in the FA and UEFA Cup victories over Arsenal and Alaves.

He started the following season by winning medals in the FA Charity Shield and European Super Cup but lost his place in the team following a last minute blunder against Bolton Wanderers at the end of August.

The arrivals of Jerzy Dudek and Chris Kirkland meant Westerveld was surplus to requirements at Anfield and in December 2001 he completed a move to Spanish side Real Sociedad.
