  PROFILE

Scottish international goalkeeper Tommy Younger was famous for becoming the first Liverpool goalkeeper since the war to leave the field injured then to return as a centre forward, against Derby County in October 1957.

A dependable last line of defence, Tommy won two Scottish League Championships with Hibernian before he joined Liverpool for a fee of ?9,000 in 1956. He became the Reds number one replacing Doug Rudham and Dave Underwood, who had shared the goalkeeping duties during the previous season.

Tommy played in the 1958 World Cup for Scotland but it was not a happy time for the goalkeeper who received his fair share of criticism. However, he bounced back and was widely regarded as one of the finest goalkeepers in Britain.

He had good command of his penalty area and was a big presence, weighing in at 15 stone. He lost his place to Bert Slater at the start of the 1959-60 season and then returned to Scotland to become player-manager at Falkirk.

He later became assistant manager at Stoke City and Leeds United, before returning to Hibernian as a director. A much-respected figure in the game Younger was President of the Scottish Football League at the time of his death in January 1984.
