In view of their recent trauma in Milan, the Reds could be relatively satisfied with a single-goal reverse on their return to Italy. This time they were blessed by impeccable refereeing, Hungarian Istvan Zsolt turning down three impassioned penalty appeals from Juventus. Indeed, when the bravery of Lawrence denied Menichelli after 80 minutes it seemed that Liverpool would return to Anfield with a clean sheet, but it was not to be. A minute later Leoncini picked up a loose ball in midfield and strolled forward before bulging the top corner of the visitors' net with a fierce drive. There was little likelihood of a response in the short time that was left and the tie remained finely balanced.

  - Juventus used home kits: shirt with black-white vertical stripes & white shorts & white socks.

Backed by the Kop at its awe-inspiring best, Liverpool overcame the challenge of one of Europe's most accomplished sides. Already one goal to the good, Juventus might have doubled their lead early on but for Lawrence's perfectly judged dive at the feet of the marauding Menichelli. Undeterred, the Reds poured forward, and their ploy of countering the Italians' blanket defence by attacking from the back paid a rapid dividend as a Stevenson free-kick was nodded back across goal by Strong to Lawler, who headed home from close range. With the team from Turin still reeling from the setback, Liverpool took the lead with a strike of savage ferocity. Hunt's header was cleared to the edge of the box where Strong met it with such velocity that, although it was fired directly at 'keeper Anzolin, he managed only to touch it on to the bar and into the net. Thus Juventus were forced to emerge from their shell and, orchestrated by Del Sol, played some delightful football, but Shankly's men ran out worthy winners of a stirring tie.

Ron Yeats remembers one of Anfield's great nights

If Ian St. John's Wembley winner is most people's favourite memory of the great Liverpool team of the 60's, Geoff Strong's goal against Celtic in the Cup Winners' Cup must come a close second.

Certainly I shall never forget it on that spectacular night when over 54,000 fans packed into Anfield to see the giants of English and Scottish football battle for a place in the European final.

Liverpool had been beaten 1 -0 at Parkhead in the first leg and although Bill Shankly won't agree with me they were lucky to escape so lightly. For the Anfield game they had a major problem.

Obviously they needed at least two goals to dispose of Celtic and there was no Roger Hunt to supply them. He had missed the first leg through injury when Phil Chisnall took over but for this game Shankly turned to the versatile Geoff Strong to give the attack the drive and punch required - and Strong responded with one of the most dramatic goals ever scored at Anfield.

It was a personal triumph for Strong who by rights should not have been on the field when he scored. Ten minutes before half-time, with the score still 0—0 he nicked a cartilage in his right knee-an injury so severe that he was literally a one legged passenger in the 2nd half. His mobility reduced to nil.it was all he could do to stand upbut despite the pain and his crippling handicap, Strong kept going with a combination of courage and good old fashioned guts to reap a rich reward.

Liverpool attacked right from the start of the game. Tommy Smith hit the bar and the red shirts swarmed around Ronnie Simpson's goal for most of the first half but the goals would not come until Smith, another of the heroes ofthe night, blasted a 25 yard free-kick through a packed defence into the Kop goal after 60 minutes.

Level on aggregate Liverpool now found new reserves of strength and stamina to increase the pressure and just five minutes after Smith's equaliser. Strong produced the winner.

Ian Callaghan raced clear down the right and flighted a perfect centre into the penalty area and there was Strong, a limping forlorn figure, rising high to meet it with a soaring jump and a deadly header into the net.
Strong played out the game but he needed a cartilage operation the following week.

Celtic fought bravely to the end and a minute from time Bobby Lennox had the ball in the Liverpool net but it was disallowed for offside.

It was as close as that at the finish. The pride of England and Scotland had given us a game to remember and one man in particular had earned himself a place in the Kop's Hall of Fame.

Full House Sees Reds Clinch League Title

All the gates except for ticket holders, were closed half-an-hour before the kick-off, and just before the teams came out a Liverpool fan emerged from the packed Kop and went to the centre of the field, where he planted a replica of the Championship trophy on the centre spot.

There was no doubt who Chelsea thought were going to be champions because they came out first and lined up in two rows and applauded the Liverpool players as they ran between them on to the pitch.

Liverpool defending the Kop, got a quick free-kick when St. John was impeded by Hinton, but from this Yeats could not reach Stevenson's lob. Chelsea were moving the ball quickly. A brilliant piece of work by Osgood took him beyond two players and Houseman's shot from the pass was not very wide. St. John got up to reach a Thompson corner, but his header went straight at Dunn who made a fine save. Chelsea were always willing to open out the game and were particularily dangerous on the left. They got another free kick near the edge of the penalty area, but this time the shot was only half hit and did not even reach Lawrence.

  No one there

A dangerous cross from Robson was cut off by Yeats, and when Liverpool got a free kick on the left St. John headed the ball across the Chelsea goalmouth, with no other Liverpool player where to take what would have been a gift.

Osgood was lying deep, and many of the good-looking moves began with him, but there was little finishing power from the Londoners. Osgood slipped a through pass in front of Tambling and the inside right, from near the edge of the penalty area, lashed the ball first time just over the angle. This was a good move, and the Liverpool defence was not too confident dealing with these fine passes from Osgood. Liverpool were striving hard enough, but they were against a defence which was playing cooly and competently, and all St. John's efforts could not create an opening.

  Hunt hits post

We were not getting much action, but Chelsea were in luck when Hunt made his own opening and then cracked a right-footer which hit the inside of the post and rebounded into Dunn's arms. He looked as surprised as anybody that the ball was in his arms and not in the net. Liverpool had done most of the pressing, but although this Chelsea defence had been hard put to on occasions to hold them it had also played well.

  Half-time: Liverpool 0, Chelsea 0

Liverpool went ahead in 48 minutes and it looked like an own goal from Dunn. Byrne got possession in midfield and slid the ball through for Hunt. The Liverpool man took it almost to the line before pulling it back and the next thing we knew was the ball in the net. One must assume that it struck Dunn and rebounded in, although, the Liverpool players gave their congratulations to Hunt.

Naturally the Kop was in an uproar, and they nearly had cause for more celebration when St. John bore down the left and saw his shot hit a defender and glance outside for a corner. And from this Liverpool almost scored, because Yeats' header was sneaking in at the angle when Dunn went up to make a good catch. The atmosphere was here now in full measure and how Stephenson missed connecting from six years was amazing.

  Fine leap

Dunn made a fine leap put to stop Callaghan's cross reaching St. John, then, while Robson was lying injured Smith went on from a pass by the winger only to stub his shot and give Dunn an easy pick up. Offside twice, and then the long leg of Yeats stopped Chelsea in their tracks. But it was Liverpool who were doing the attacking, and a shot from Stevenson slewed well wide, while St. John's effort to get his head to Callaghan's chip was foiled by Hinton.

Yeats came up to make a header which passed over and then Chelsea grabbed a surprise equalizer in the 62nd minute. Tambling switched the ball down the right and Murray outpaced Yeats and then guided it into the net as Lawrence came out.

Chelsea became more menacing after their goal and a mistake by Yeats very nearly let in Robson, who retrieved the situation for Liverpool by trying to take the ball forward instead of shooting first time when Lawrence was off his line.

But Liverpool went into the lead again in 69 minutes and this was a fine goal. Hunt beat one man and then came right and then went left again, leaving him with the chance to make a left foot shot. He hit this hard and low and although Dunn partly made a stop, the power was too much and the ball rolled on over the line. This set up the Kop off again and they gave us pretty well their whole repertoire.

They groaned when a St. John header slipped outside instead of inside the post because if anyone deserved to score it was St. John, who had played so well. It had now become a case really of waiting for the end because Chelsea were not getting within range and Liverpool, too, were happy to coast along. One can hardly blame them in the view of the tough job at Hampden Park on Thursday night.

With minutes left the Kop began their: "Ee-aye-addio, we've won the League" chant.

  Liverpool 2, Chelsea 1.

When the final whistle went, several Liverpool supporters raced on to the pitch, and as Yeats was congratulated by the Chelsea players one boy gave him a replica of the trophy. Manager Bill Shankly came on to the pitch to join his players and he congratulated each one of them in turn. Then the players went on a lap of honour and the sight as they reached the Kop was a tremendous kaleidoscope of red and white colours.

I doubt if anywhere else in the world could a football ground produce scenes like these. After running round the ground the players lined up in the middle of the field and when the crowd chanted: "Geoff Strong, Geoff Strong", he came out from the tunnel limping and joined them. His reception too, was terrific.

For Bill Shankly's newly-crowned League champions, this was an occasion to expunge from the memory. Hard though they battled, little went right in a match that never lived up to its billing. Yet after an eminently forgettable first half, in which two potentially thrilling sides negated each other, Liverpool showed signs of getting on top. Ironically, it was not long before Borussia went ahead following the night's sweetest move. Held fed Emmerich on the left, then dashed to receive the chipped return some 18 yards from goal, whence he gave Lawrence no chance with a destructive volley. The Reds hit back with a controversial egualiser, Thompson reaching the byline - a linesman appeared to signal that the ball was out but the referee ignored him - before crossing for Hunt to find the roof of the net. Now it was all Liverpool and they might have won on 89 minutes when Hunt, struggling with injury, shot weakly when clean through. Extra time brought ultimate frustration when Lawrence blocked a shot on the edge of his box and the ball rebounded to Libuda, 35 yards out. The winger responded with a first-time lob that sailed over the 'keeper, hit the inside of a post and bounced into the net off the stretching Yeats. The fates had spoken and the Cup was lost.
