GOAL DENIES REDS VICTORY
An own goal five minutes from time by Adam Hitchen denied Liverpool under-17s all
three points as they drew 1-1 at Southampton in their opening Academy league match. Danny
Smith scored the Liverpool goal.
Despite the cruel blow denying the team victory Reds Under-17 boss Dave Shannon was
delighted with the performance of his side and says things bode well for the season.
Shannon said: "It was a very hot day in Southampton and it was hot just
watching the game, never mind playing in it and the boys deserve a lot of credit and did
very well.
"We played some controlled football at times and passed the ball well but
Southampton were always dangerous on the break.
"We took the lead five minutes into the second half with a very good goal.
Danny Guthrie beats a couple of players and found Lee Peltier in space. Lee played a great
ball to our left back Danny Smith who he spotted running in, and Danny slid the ball under
the keeper for 1-0.
"We then had chances to wrap the game up. Karl Noon was unlucky to see his
shot come back off the post and Joxer (John-Paul Kelly) hit a great strike but the keeper
pulled off a magnificent save.
"Southampton equalised five minutes from time when our keeper Dave Roberts
made a save but the ball then hit our defender Adam Hitchen and rolled into the net."

A fantastic goal from Joxer
(John-Paul Kelly) was the highlight of Liverpool under-17s 4-1 win at Derby County, and
but for missed chances the scoreline could have been double the final total, (writes Steve
Hunter).
Dave Shannon's side played some terrific football and the Reds under-17 boss was
absolutely delighted with his team.
Said Dave Shannon: "I'm very pleased with the boys and it could have been a
lot more than 4-1 in the end.
"Calum Woods opened the scoring with a cool finish from Danny Smith's
free-kick and after 15 minutes it was 2-0 when Joxer (John-Paul Kelly) scored with an
unstoppable shot from 25-yards out. It was a fantastic goal!
"Derby pulled a goal back and then we missed some great chances. I was getting
frustrated because if you keep missing chances then that gives the opposition confidence.
"Conal Platt made it 3-1 after 65 minutes with a fine opportunist strike and
Phil Townley made it 4-1 after 75 with a Jimmy Greaves tap-in after some great play from
Karl Noon."

Liverpool under-17s battled out a
goalless draw at Everton in their latest Academy outing, which was a game not for the
football purists, (writes Steve Hunter).
Reds under-17s boss Dave Shannon admitted the game was a battle and not very pretty
to watch and was disappointed with his side's overall display.
Striker Karl Noon came closest to scoring for Liverpool with a header which was
cleared off the line, and the Reds lost goalkeeper Paul Lancaster after just 30 minutes
with a knee injury. His replacement, under-15 keeper David Roberts came on and can be
pleased with his performance.
Said Dave Shannon: "I was disappointed to be honest as we didn't play the
football we are capable of and didn't create chances.
"I like my teams to play football but we just lacked the quality in this game,
but at least we didn't lose and a point is better than nothing."

30), Lee Peltier, Danny Smith, Jordan Holmes, Adam Hitchin, Calum Woods, Phil Townley,
Danny Guthrie, Karl Noon, Adam Hammill, Francis Smith. Subs unused: Nicky Platt, Michael

Mini
derby disappointment for Under-17s
There was major disappointment for Liverpool Under-17s in the Academy derby as they
had a man sent-off and went down 4-1 at Everton.
Jordan Holmes was sent-off after just seven minutes for a terrible tackle and
Everton took full advantage of the extra man.
The Blues led 2-0 at half time before Karl Noon pulled a goal back after good play
from John-Paul Kelly (Joxer). Phil Townley almost made it 2-2 with a spectacular overhead
scissor kick that flew just wide. Then two goals in the space of two minutes won Everton
the points.
Despite the defeat Liverpool Under-17 boss Dave Shannon remained upbeat.
Shannon said: "It was always going to be difficult when Jordan Holmes was
sent-off. It was a bad tackle and he had to go off.
"To be fair to the boys they really kept it going and gave it their all. Phil
Townley was unlucky with his spectacular effort and if that had gone in who knows?
"I know we lost 4-1 to Everton but the bigger picture is we performed well
under difficult circumstances."
Liverpool Under-17s: Paul Lancaster, Jordan Holmes,
Danny Smith, Lee Peltier, Adam Hitchin, John-Paul Kelly, Phil Townley, Danny Guthrie, Karl
Noon, Conal Platt, Callum Woods. Subs unused: Jimmy Ryan, Dave Roberts (GK), Michael
Burns, Ray Putterill, Jay Spearing.

There was disappointment in the
Academy derby for Liverpool who went down 1-0 at home to Everton on Saturday, (writes
Steve Hunter).
Dave Shannon fielded a trialist goalkeeper in Richard Martin who gave a good
account of himself by all accounts.
The two teams drew 0-0 at Everton earlier this season but for the Under-17 team it
was a disappointing day as the Blue half of the city took the honours.

Smith (Raymond Putterill 65), Karl Noon, Conal Platt, Phil Townley. Subs unused: Michael
