Liverpool under-19 manager John
Owens was far from happy after seeing his side throw away a two goal lead to Fulham who
drew level with the last kick of the game to make it 3-3, writes Steve Hunter.
Liverpool were leading 3-1 at the Academy in Kirkby but the London side showed all
their fighting spirit to level.
Steven Gillespie scored twice and Ryan Wilkie were on target for Liverpool.
Said John Owens: "This was our first game of the season and I was disappointed
with the performance. They equalised with the last kick of the game and leading 3-1 with
four minutes left you should win the game.
"We didn't play as a team, our passing was poor and it was a disappointing
performance. The two goals we gave away late on were very messy and poor goals to concede.
"I rested our keeper Paul Harrison after he played for the reserves up at
Newcastle on Thursday and was excellent. David Raven played centre half for the reserves
also but I gave him an outing at right back today.
"We are going to have to come to terms without having Darren Potter in
midfield after he went to Melwood during the summer to train with the first team. Robbie
Foy also left us for Melwood on Friday so we will have to cope without those two
players."

A fantastic goal from Mark Smyth was
the highlight of Liverpool under-19s Academy derby 2-2 draw with Everton but it was
frustration for the Reds as it's now five out of six games drawn this season (writes Steve
Hunter).
John Owens side had a bad start in the game too at Netherton when Everton took the
lead after just 47 seconds but goals from the returning Steven Gillespie and then Mark
Smyth put the Reds 2-1 up. However, poor defending gifted Everton an equaliser just before
half time and that's the way it stayed.
Owens said: "We have become the draw specialists unfortunately. It didn't help
matters going a goal down in the opening 47 seconds as I had told the lads to start with a
high tempo. It was poor defending that cost us.
"Steven Gillespie was back after hamstring trouble and will be pleased to
score. Mark Smyth then put us 2-1 up with a fantastic strike from 25-yards out that flew
into the top corner.
"They equalised through poor defending by us and the second half was a bit of
a non event really with both sets of players frightened of making a mistake.
"We lost Ryan Wilkie after 10 minutes with a hamstring problem and I thought
James Smith at left back had an excellent game."

Liverpool under-19s slipped to their
first Academy defeat of the season when they went down to a 3-1 home defeat at the hands
of Wolves at the Academy in Kirkby (writes Steve Hunter).
John Owens side were second best throughout the match and had only a Mark Smyth
goal to show for their efforts. The Reds lost centre half Danny O'Donnell after 25 minutes
after he was suffering from a virus, but on the plus side highly rated centre back David
Raven returned from injury, and under-17 striker Conal Platt made his under-19 debut.
Said Reds under-19 manager John Owens: "Wolves had eight of the players who
played for the reserves against us on Tuesday while we were without striker Steven
Gillespie who has a back problem.
"I was particularly impressed with their two strikers who were very mobile and
bright and we were guilty of poor defending at times as well."

It was a case of honours even for
Liverpool Under-19s as they drew 2-2 with Everton in the local Academy derby with hot shot
Steven Gillespie scoring twice. (writes Steve Hunter).
Gillespie took his tally for the season to 17 goals, which includes 16 for the
Under-19s and one for the reserve team.
Liverpool took a first half lead through Gillespie but were pegged back as Everton
stormed into a 2-1 lead.
John Owens side left it late to get an equaliser with Gillespie on the mark yet
again.
Meanwhile Under-19 Academy defender James Smith has left the club after being told
he wouldn't be offered a new contract at Liverpool. Preston North End are suggested to be
interested in centre half Smith.

LIVERPOOL fell at the first hurdle
in the FA Youth Cup at Anfield last night for the third season in a row.
John Owens' side crashed out of the competition in the third round stage, as they
had against Leeds and Port Vale in the last two years, as hardworking and bright
Gillingham side deservedly booked their place in the fourth round thanks to a first-half
header from striker Akwasi Edusei.
The Reds could never manage to find a rhythm and when they did they found Gills'
captain, goalkeeper Daniel Knowles equal to anything they had and a Karl Noon header which
hit the post was the nearest they came to an equaliser.
Liverpool were without England youth international midfielder David Mannix, who
failed a late fitness test. But highlyrated Scottish duo Robbie Foy and Ryan Wilkie took
their place as did promising Republic of Ireland midfielder John Paul Kelly, who shrugged
off a recent injury.
Both sides started brightly and, watched by Reds' first-team coach Sammy Lee and
chief executive Rick Parry, Foy had the first chance.
Both sides featured youngsters who were always looking to take defenders on. Foy
was one of those, and he worked a short corner with Wilkie, but Knowles got down well to
his angled drive into the Kop goal.
Ten minutes in, the visitors' lively front-man Edusei fired in a rising shot after
a neat lay-off from Jon Wallis as both sides traded blows.
Play was swinging from end to end a minute later Kelly latched onto England youth
international midfielder Danny Guthrie's superb ball into the box, but Knowles was off his
line quickly to block the Irishman's shot.
Nippy Gills' left-winger Matthew Jarvis had already showed his pace with one run
into the box. And after weaving his way through from almost the half-way line his rising
shot from the edge of the box flew just over.
Guthrie, normally a central midfielder, was revelling in his right-hand role early
on and he burst into the box on 17 min-utes but from an evertightening angle he forced his
shot across goal with nobody to supply a finishing touch.
Wilkie bustled his way to the byline on 22 minutes, but from his cutback Guthrie
miskicked and Mark Jones' follow-up was blocked.
But five minutes later Gillingham, who had always looked threathening, took the
lead. Wallis' driven free-kick was pushed away low down by Liverpool's Northern Ireland
international keeper Paul Willis. But he was left with no chance when, after the follow up
wasn't properly cleared, Edusei headed home right-back Mark Cornielle's cross virtually
unchallenged in the six-yard box.
The Reds though hit back and Noon just failed to get on the end of Kelly's
throughball before Foy almost fashioned an equaliser. The Edinburgh-born attacker wriggled
his way into the box, but his low angled drive was pushed away superbly by Knowles, and
defender Boorman cleared the loose ball.
In the second period Liverpool's attacking play grew increasingly desperate as they
searched for an equaliser. And it the visitors who looked the more likely to add to their
lead.
But with 20 minutes left Liverpool almost drew level. Foy and Wilkie linked on the
left and from the latter's cross Noon got ahead of his marker only to see his header come
back off the upright.
It seemed the missed opportunity deflated the Reds and Gillingham almost doubled
their advantage five minutes later, Jarvis crashed a shot off the underside of the bar.
And from the rebound Belfast-born Willis hacked clear after Edusei had steered the ball
towards the Kop goal.
The Reds appeared to be heading out but they were handed a glorious chance to force
extra-time two minutes from time. Full-back Danny Smith, who had pushed forward, steered
the ball into Guthrie's path. But despite having time and space as he moved into the box
on the left, the 16-year-old's shot lacked any venom and Knowles saved.
With that any hope of a prolonged run in this year's competition for the Reds was
gone.
