There was disappointment for
Liverpool's new Academy Under-18 team as they crashed to a 3-1 home defeat at the hands of
Crystal Palace, writes Steve Hunter.
Palace were a strong team and caused Liverpool all sorts of problems and the only
real positive manager John Owens could take from the game was midfielder David Mannix
completed 90 minutes.
Owens said: "We were 2-0 down at half time and we were up against it to say
the least and it could have been a lot more.
"We were better in the second half when Joxer (John-Paul Kelly) scored
following a right wing cross from David Mannix, but we let them score a third near the
end.
"I was pleased with some phases of our play but we have an attack minded
midfield and sometimes that leaves you vulnerable to counter attacks."

Liverpool Under-18s went down to
their second straight defeat of the Academy season when they lost 2-1 at 10 man Charlton
Athletic, writes Steve Hunter.
Overall it was a poor performance from Liverpool after last Saturday's opening day
3-1 home defeat by Crystal Palace, and Reds boss John Owens feels his team can do a lot
better.
John Owens said: "It was another disappointing performance and we have too
many players trying to play as individuals rather than as a team. I was pleased though
with Robbie Threlfall from our Under-16 team who did very well.
"We were disappointed with the first Charlton goal as the ball quite clearly
went out of play before they scored.
"Conal Platt equalised for us early in the second half and then had a great
chance when he was clean through but was fouled resulting in their defending being
sent-off.
"Unfortunately we didn't take advantage of having the extra man and they
scored again."

Honours were even in the Academy
derby as a Karl Noon penalty earned Liverpool Under-18s a 1-1 draw away to Everton, but it
was a match dominated by spot kicks, writes Steve Hunter.
There were three penalties in all and Liverpool goalkeeper Paul Willis was the hero
for the Reds when he saved one in the second half.
Liverpool Under-18 manager John Owens said: "We've got to be pleased with the
result as we haven't had the greatest results recently.
"We are not governed by results at the Liverpool Academy and player
development and getting match experience is the big thing for us, but we know we have to
improve our level of play.
"Everton went 1-0 up from the penalty spot but Karl Noon equalised for us from
the spot after Paul Barratt had been brought down.
"Paul Willis made a great save from another Everton penalty in the second half
and we could have won the game in the end. We played some good football but didn't convert
our chances.
"I thanked the lads for their effort after the game but warned them about
being a little sloppy at times and switching off at crucial moments."
Owens also spoke about the likely chances for some of the Under-16 players to get a
chance at a higher level this season.
Owens said: "There are some good players in Dave Shannon's Under-16 team and a
few have made the bench in my team this season. The problem is we don't want to just throw
them into the Under-18 team because some of the players are only 14 and 15 so it would be
a big step for them."

Liverpool Under-18s suffered further
disappointment at the weekend when they lost 1-0 at Manchester United.
Liverpool stay rooted to the bottom of the table and manager John Owens said once
again their failure to score goals cost them the result. United have now done the double
this season over Liverpool Under-18s.
Owens told Liverpoolfc.tv: "It was a close game but they scored after 20
minutes. We had a trialist from Australia in goal Caleb Patterson who did quite well and
we will have to make a pretty quick decision about him.
"We were much better in the second half but the story of our season is not
scoring goals."

It was a case of honours even in the
Under-18 Academy derby as Liverpool came from a goal down to get a confidence boosting 1-1
draw with Everton, writes Steve Hunter.
The Blues took a first half lead but an attacking change at half-time from Reds
Under-18 manage John Owens paid dividends as the Reds fathomed an equaliser.
Substitute Phil Townley took on the Everton defence and from his cross the ball was
deflected via the boot of a Blues defender and into the net.
Liverpool fielded trialist Luke Coleman for the first half but he was withdrawn at
half-time and replaced by Karl Noon.
Owens told Liverpoolfc.tv: "I thought it was a good game of football for a
derby game and we did well to come back. I put three forwards on in the second half and it
worked well for us.
"There wasn't really a great chance to win in after we equalised as I thought
both teams lacked a cutting edge to match the approach play."

Liverpool under-18s are celebrating
their first win of 2005 after an impressive 2-1 home victory over Everton in the Academy
derby, writes Mark Platt.
Paul Barratt and James Frayne netted the goals that gave the Reds a morale-boosting
triumph at the Kirkby complex.
Barratt opened the scoring after 26 minutes, firing past the Blues 'keeper with a
low drive from the right edge of the area that nestled sweetly into the far bottom corner.
Everton, who had started stronger and gone close with a shot that hit the post,
then levelled with a scrambled effort shortly before the half hour mark.
The second half saw a much-improved performance from John Owens team and Frayne
struck what turned out to be the winning goal 11 minutes after the break.
The impressive Jay Spearing split open the Everton defence with a searching through
ball that Frayne, beating the offside trap with exquisite timing, latched onto before
proceeding to keep his composure and finish clinically.
An intense period of Everton pressure late in the game will have caused a few
hearts to flutter on the Liverpool bench but the defence held firm and Reds deservedly
held on to record a long-awaited success.
The Reds youngsters may still be rooted to the bottom of the Academy table but on
the evidence of this performance, with a starting eleven that included four under-16
players, there is much to be optimistic about.
Team: Willis, Spearing, Darby, Hitchen, Threlfall,
Guthrie (Smith), Hammill, Barratt, Frayne, Platt (Noon), Burns. Unused subs: Lancaster,

UNDER-18S
LOSE AT SUNDERLAND
There was disappointment for Liverpool Under-18s as they went down 2-0 at
Sunderland when defensive mistakes cost them dear.
Under-18 boss John Owens felt a combination of mistakes and fatigue from Thursday's
win over Everton were telling factors in the defeat.
Owens said: "There was a tiredness from our game Thursday and we contributed
to our own misfortune defensive wise.
"Sunderland went 1-0 up following a careless pass from Adam Hitchen then he
conceded a penalty in the second half from which they scored. It certainly wasn't one of
Adam's best games that's for sure.
"We had chances but like I have said before our problem this season has been
scoring goals."

Liverpool marched into the fourth
round of the FA Youth Cup and a home date with Tottenham Hotspur after a resounding 6-0
win over Wealdstone at Anfield thanks to a hat-trick from Conal Platt, writes Steve
Hunter.
Platt was the hero for Liverpool with some excellent finishing and the Republic of
Ireland youth international led the line really well and sent the Reds into a fourth round
meeting with Tottenham which will played some time in mid-January 2005.
Liverpool's other goalscorers were Danny Guthrie, Karl Noon and defender Jordan
Holmes.
Liverpool's Under-18 manager John Owens was in charge of the team along with
Under-16 manager Dave Shannon and eight players from the Under-18 team formed the basis of
the starting team.
Utility player Lee Peltier who would have started this match at centre half is
ruled out for up to three months with a back injury while exciting Under-16 winger Michael
Burns also misses out through injury.
Owens can't play over-age players David Mannix, Danny O'Donnell, Ryan Wilkie, James
Smith, Robbie Foy or goalkeeper Paul Willis, and Paul Lancaster was a late withdrawal
through injury so Under-16 keeper Dave Roberts started in goal.
Since reaching the FA Youth Cup semi-final in 2001 thanks to eight goals from a
certain Neil Mellor in just four games, Liverpool have crashed out of the competition ever
since then with embarrasing home defeats to Barnsley and Gillingham.
Wealdstone of the Ryman Premier League, whose former heroes of the past include
Stuart Pearce and Vinnie Jones, were under the command of former Wimbledon player Francis
Joseph.
As a nice gesture before kick-off the Wealdstone squad placed a wreath at the
Hillsborough Memorial.
Liverpool Under-18s are bottom of their league so this was a chance to restore some
much needed confidence in the young Reds final game of 2004.
There have been some high profile casualties in the FA Youth Cup 3rd round and
Manchester United and Chelsea are both out of the tournament. Chelsea crashed out to
Gillingham who beat Liverpool last season.
Wealdstone kicked-off attacking the Kop in thefirst half and actually had the first
chance of the game after five minutes when Reds keeper Dave Roberts made a brilliant save
to keep out a stinging 22-yard drive from Alex Augustine.
Liverpool then began to show their class as the youngsters were enjoying parading
their talents on the Anfield pitch. Captain Danny Guthrie led by example in the centre of
midfield. A player once rejected by Manchester United their loss is Liverpool's gain and
he has played many games for the reserves this season. Also shining in midfield was Paul
Barratt who Liverpool captured from Manchester City at the start of this season.
Barratt's surging runs down the right of midfield caused many problems for the
Wealdstone defence and they just couldn't contain him.
Conal Platt opened the scoring for Liverpool after 21 minutes but the goal owed
much to some fantastic play from Barratt. The midfielder beat four players down the right
and from his low cross Platt slotted into the Anfield Road end net.
Two minutes later Barratt did the same again with a great run down the right but
there was no one there to convert despite an inviting low cross.
It was 2-0 after 25 minutes and Platt again was the scorer with a brilliant
individual goal. Picking the ball up in a central position Platt was some 22-yards out
before he hit an unstoppable shot into the net past a startled goalkeeper Mitchell Swain.
Barratt then went close with a delicate chip that brought a good save off Swain but
the keeper had no chance with another brilliant strike after 32 minutes. This time captain
Danny Guthrie the goalscorer with a 25-yard blast from the left side of the box that flew
into the net.
Three minutes later it was 4-0 and this time the scorer was Karl Noon, finishing
well after being superbly picked out by Guthrie.
The trickery of Adam Hammill was also a potent threat for Liverpool and he almost
scored what would have been a memorable goal after 44 minutes. After single handedly
turning theWealdstone defence inside out his effort was brilliantly kept out by Swain.
It became 5-0 after 58 minutes when right back Jordan Holmes got on the
score-sheet, slotting home after brilliant play once more from Barratt this time down the
left wing.
Conal Platt wasn't to be outdone and he got a deserved hat-trick at the Kop end
after 67 minutes after a through ball from strike partner Karl Noon.
Barratt deserved a goal and he nearly scored when he ran clean through but was
denied by a good save, but the unsighted referee gave a goal-kick instead of a corner.
It was a great night's entertainment and the Liverpool youngsters showed a great
professional attitude. Wealdstone also deserve credit and did very well and they had great
support from a loyal following in the Kop.
Liverpool: Dave Roberts, Jordan Holmes, Danny Smith,
Adam Hitchen (Calum Woods 65), Robbie Threlfall, Danny Guthrie (Captain), Adam Hammill
(Charlie Barnett 63), Jay Spearing (Jimmy Ryan 72), Karl Noon, Conal Platt, Paul Barratt.
Subs unused: Sam Rukin (GK), Phil Townley.
Wealdstone: Mitchell Swain, Lee Holland, Rodney Hicks, Eric Donald Gbio, Todd
Allison, Carl Martin, Sam Sharples, John Christian, Mohammed Jimbah, Mark Thompson, Alex
Augustine.
Referee: W D Smallwood.
Liverpoolfc.tv Man of the match: Paul Barratt. An
outstanding display from Barratt who caused all sorts of problems to the Wealdstone
defence.
