U23s held to 1-1 draw at Manchester United

Liverpool U23s were held to a 1-1 draw by their Manchester United counterparts in an entertaining Premier League 2 clash at Leigh Sports Village on Tuesday night.

An audacious finish by Harry Wilson had his team in front at the break, only for Josh Harrop to restore parity from the penalty spot early in the second half.

The result brought an end to the young Reds’ winning run in the division, but did so despite long spells of dominance and a number of chances to claim three points.

As well as the first-team quality of Danny Ings and Mamadou Sakho, U23s boss Michael Beale was able to call upon the services of summer signing Marko Grujic in fielding a formidable line-up.

It was the hosts who went close first, though, when Matthew Willock curled an effort narrowly wide of the right post from the edge of the area in the sixth minute.

Liverpool responded well and industrious work by Ings on the right flank presented Wilson with a chance to scamper into space inside the United penalty box.

The Welshman looked up and rolled the ball across the area to a waiting Grujic at the back post – but the midfielder was thwarted by Sadiq El Fitouri before he could convert.

On 18 minutes, Beale’s charges found the breakthrough.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, impressive again from right-back, swung in a deep cross that Ings nodded onto the post yards out, and Connor Randall’s follow-up was blocked.

But, in came Pedro Chirivella and his low shot was intelligently diverted with a flick from Wilson that deceived the goalkeeper – moving in the opposite direction – and put Liverpool ahead.

Tiago Ilori almost doubled the lead with a header which was saved, while Devonte Redmond crashed a drive against the crossbar at the other end as the contest warmed up nicely at the halfway point.

United’s resurgence continued into the second period and they levelled the score at 1-1 within five minutes of the teams returning from the interval.

A lengthy dribble by Scott McTominay drew a Chirivella challenge inside the area that the referee judged to be a foul, and Harrop stepped up to send the penalty low past the reach of Kamil Grabara.

Kevin Stewart skimmed a good effort just wide as Liverpool composed themselves – and they did steadily begin to assert control in their quest to re-take the lead.

An excellent dribble at speed down the left allowed Randall to fire a superb cross into the middle in search of Ings, who could not quite connect with his head.

The striker should have netted on 73 minutes when Chirivella expertly found his run off the left flank and he burst clear, but United ‘keeper Sam Johnstone stood up and blocked the shot.

Grujic rued a missed header after being left unmarked to meet a free-kick into the box, Stewart miscued a late chance from a Sakho knockdown and Ings was denied again by Johnstone in the third minute of stoppage-time – meaning Beale’s team were forced to settle for a point.

Liverpool U23s: Grabara, Alexander-Arnold, Randall, Ilori, Sakho, Stewart, Wilson (Brannagan), Chirivella, Ings, Grujic, Ejaria (Woodburn). Unused substitutes: Maguire, Kelleher, Lennon.

U23s strike twice in convincing Reading win

Liverpool U23s got back to winning ways in Premier League 2 as they ran out 2-0 winners against Reading in a one-sided encounter at Prenton Park on Sunday.

The Reds, playing their first league fixture since a narrow defeat to Manchester City on October 28, claimed a comfortable victory thanks to goals in each half from Mamadou Sakho and Ben Woodburn.

Michael Beale's men wasted little time in signalling their intentions as they applied pressure to the Royals' goal from the outset.

Dangerous crosses from Brooks Lennon and Woodburn almost provided the early breakthrough, but Matty Virtue and Cameron Brannagan were unable to apply the finishing touch on each occasion.

That mattered little, though, with the hosts eventually taking the lead after just 14 minutes as Sakho followed in to force the ball home after Ovie Ejaria's controlled effort was well saved.

Liverpool continued to dominate as the half wore on, but both Lennon and Woodburn were unable to add to the lead as they fired shots straight at the 'keeper in positions where they might have done better.

The second period followed a similar pattern to the first, though the Reds were given a slight scare in the 50th minute when Kamil Grabara was called into action by Tyler Frost's low effort at the back post.

And when Cameron Brannagan hit the bar with 15 minutes remaining, the game appeared set up for a Reading sucker punch.

Any hopes the visitors had of a smash and grab were ended in the final 10 minutes, however, as the ball broke somewhat fortuitously for Woodburn from a Madger Gomes cross and he completed the simple task of tapping into an empty net.

Match report: U23s ease to PL Cup win over Huddersfield

Liverpool U23s made it two wins from two Premier League Cup games with an impressive 3-0 victory over Huddersfield Town at Prenton Park this afternoon.

Brooks Lennon continued his fine run of goalscoring form to give Michael Beale’s side the lead midway through the first half, before captain Harry Wilson netted from the spot with 13 minutes remaining and Cameron Brannagan added a late third with a superb long-range strike.

The young Reds now sit three points clear of Ipswich Town - who they beat 3-0 away last month - and West Bromwich Albion at the top of Group G, and return to Premier League Cup action against the Baggies next month.

Lennon’s clinical equaliser claimed a point for Liverpool in their International Cup tie with Porto in midweek, and the American forward notched his third goal in four games 25 minutes in.

The 19-year-old latched on to Wilson’s defence-splitting pass and produced another excellent finish to beat Huddersfield goalkeeper Luke Coddington.

The opening goal was just reward for Beale’s team’s strong start and Brannagan went close to doubling their advantage soon after, before Coddington denied Matty Virtue.

Huddersfield came back into the game after half-time but the visitors once again had Coddington to thank for keeping them within a goal of Liverpool when he tipped Wilson’s well-struck volley over the bar.

However, there was nothing the Terriers’ keeper could do to prevent Wilson getting on the scoresheet with a 77th-minute penalty after Corey Whelan had been brought down in the area.

And Brannagan then sealed the three points with an unstoppable 25-yard drive in the last minute.

Liverpool U23s: Grabara, Whelan, Juanma, Ilori, Sakho, Williams (M Gomes), Wilson, Virtue (Dhanda), T Gomes (P Alves), Brannagan, Lennon.

Joe Gomez plays 90 minutes as U23s beat Burnley

Joe Gomez took another positive step forward in his comeback by playing the full 90 minutes as Liverpool U23s beat Burnley 4-0 in the second round of the Lancashire Senior Cup at the Kirkby Academy on Wednesday night.

The 19-year-old was one of three centre-backs, alongside Mamadou Sakho and Tiago Ilori, during another impressive display from the young Reds.

Gomez - who suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury in October 2015 - looked very comfortable as he saw a lot of the ball and also provided an assist.

It proved a terrific night for Matty Virtue, too, with the midfielder claiming his first hat-trick for the club courtesy of three outstanding strikes.

Spaniard Madger Gomes enjoyed an excellent game as well, and opened the scoring with a spectacular left-footer from more than 25 yards out that clipped the underside of the bar on its way in.

On 26 minutes, a flowing move down the left flank involving Cameron Brannagan and Juanma found Toni Gomes, who sent a header just over from close range.

But it was 2-0 on the stroke of half-time. A strong run from Jordan Williams allowed him to find Madger Gomes, and his ball across to Virtue was finished superbly.

The midfielder grabbed his second of the contest on 55 minutes courtesy of a Gomez assist, the returning defender providing a lovely pass for his teammate to turn a marker and send a precise, low shot into the net.

Liverpool rounded off a 4-0 result - and assured their place in the quarter-finals - 10 minutes before the final whistle when Virtue produced another fine finish to seal a deserved hat-trick, after great work from Brannagan.

Reflecting on the victory, U23s manager Michael Beale told Liverpoolfc.com: "It was fantastic to see Joe Gomez play his first 90 minutes in a long time.

"He came through it fine and he had a big smile on his face at the end, which was great to see.

"I was delighted for Matty to get his hat-trick. His form has been very good throughout the season and the goals have been coming.

"To see Madger get an excellent goal was also really important and, overall, it was a really good performance from the boys."

Liverpool U23s: Grabara, Whelan (Alves 60), Juanma (Brimmer 75), Gomez, Sakho (N Phillips 70), Ilori, Brannagan, Williams, T Gomes, Virtue, M Gomes. Unused substitutes: Lennon, Firth.

U23s into Lancashire Senior Cup final with 6-0 win

Liverpool's U23s secured a place in the final of the Lancashire Senior Cup as they thrashed Rochdale 6-0 on Wednesday.

The Reds did most of the hard work during a fantastic first-half display at Kirkby that saw Yan Dhanda score one, set up both Tom Brewitt and Toni Gomes, and play a significant role in the latter's second strike.

And the 18-year-old rounded off a man-of-the-match performance in the second period, as he confidently slotted home the hosts' fifth.

Matty Virtue later produced a clever finish to seal a comfortable victory, which sets up a meeting with either Fleetwood Town or Blackburn Rovers in the final.

U23s boss Mike Garrity opted to field an entirely different starting XI to that which beat Manchester City 3-2 in a thrilling game on Monday.

And he was rewarded with an energetic start from a fresh team as the Reds took the lead just four minutes in.

After Dhanda's corner was initially repelled, the young forward sent in a teasing cross that required only the faintest of touches from defender Brewitt to turn it home.

The same man was on hand to clock up his second assist just 10 minutes later when his left-to-right dribble opened up space for Toni Gomes to smash the ball in.

And, moments after seeing a curled effort palmed away at full stretch, Dhanda had a goal of his own to celebrate when he ran onto Madger Gomes' brilliant through pass and finished coolly with just a quarter of the game gone.

Dhanda wasn't done there, either. With the half-time break closing in, the No.11 drove at the Rochdale defence before playing in Sam Hart, who produced a sublime dink for Toni Gomes to head in his second from close range.

The hosts' first-half performance had all but sealed their place in the final, and so it was little surprise to see something of a drop in intensity in the second period.

Rochdale, meanwhile, appeared determined to deny the Reds the space they had offered in the opening 45 minutes, and they were largely successful in that regard until just past the hour mark.

At that point, though, a brilliant curled pass from Kane Lewis split the entire visiting defence and left Dhanda alone to finish one-on-one, which he did with little trouble.

And there was still time for Monday's hero Virtue to get in on the act, as he drove into the box before finishing from a tight angle from Toni Gomes' low cross to seal it.

Liverpool U23s: Kelleher, K. Lewis, Hart, Masterson, Whelan (McAuley 75), Brewitt, J. Williams, Virtue, T. Gomes, M. Gomes (Adekanye 66), Dhanda. Unused subs: Firth, N. Phillips.
