U18s held to draw in Gerrard's first game

Liverpool U18s were held to a 1-1 draw in an eventful first game for manager Steven Gerrard against Derby County on Friday.

Glen McAuley had a goal disallowed and Dan Atherton saved a Rams penalty before Liam Coyle nodded the young Reds ahead just before half-time.

But the hosts levelled early in the second period as Jack Stretton forced the ball over the line – and the two teams had to settle for a point apiece from their league opener.

It was almost a dream start to the Gerrard era with barely three minutes on the clock.

A turnover in possession in midfield saw Edvard Tagseth move the ball forward to Liam Millar and he immediately through to McAuley, who nonchalantly swept a fine finish from the left into the right corner.

But celebrations were stopped by the linesman’s flag for a narrow offside.

Gerrard would have been pleased with the way his charges were controlling the tempo, though they presented Derby with a golden chance to take the lead on 12 minutes.

Morgan Whittaker got free in behind to reach a flick-on and was fouled in the area by Anthony Glennon, but the Rams man’s subsequent low penalty was superbly palmed away by Atherton to his left.

Liverpool re-asserted themselves as the opening 45 minutes elapsed and McAuley was frustrated after demanding and receiving a neat pass into the right channel of the box from Curtis Jones and sending his shot too close to the goalkeeper.

The breakthrough finally arrived before the interval, though.

Adam Lewis’ left-footed, in-swinging corner from the right flank found Coyle, who diverted a looping header into the far corner to put Gerrard’s side in front.

There was action at either end at the outset of the second half, Atherton agilely clawing an effort off the line and the lively McAuley drawing a save from the Derby stopper.

And the home side equalised in the 51st minute.

A cross into the six-yard area from the left hand side prompted a scramble and Atherton and his defence were unable to prevent Stretton from forcing the ball over the line.

It continued to be an open contest throughout the half and Liverpool were perhaps the more adventurous of the two sides, only for the final touch or pass to let them down.

That said, substitute Luis Longstaff might have won it for his team moments after coming on, but he skewed a strike wide on the bounce following a burst along the flank and cross by Millar.

Liverpool U18s: Atherton, Hunter, Lewis, R Williams, Glennon, Coyle, Sharif (Longstaff, 76), Tagseth, McAuley (Simmonds, 66), Jones, Millar. Unused substitutes: Lattie, Kelly, Brookwell.

U18s win five-goal thriller with Blackburn

Liverpool U18s marked their opening home game of the season with a 3-2 victory over Blackburn Rovers at the Academy.

Edvard Tagseth bagged the goal the home side had threatened throughout the first half on 38 minutes with a calm follow-up finish from Glen McAuley’s deflected shot.

Liam Coyle’s second strike in as many matches doubled the advantage shortly after the break and, although Daniel Butterworth halved the deficit, a third from McAuley re-established control for Steven Gerrard’s team.

Brad Lynch set up a nervy finale for the hosts when he cracked in an excellent effort from a short corner routine, but the young Reds held out for three points.

Liverpool began the game assertively and created the first genuine chance as the clock ticked into its 10th minute.

Abdi Sharif broke into space on the right edge of the penalty area and clipped in a cross which teed up Curtis Jones for a well-executed volley that was unfortunately straight at the goalkeeper.

Gerrard’s side squandered an even better opportunity moments later.

With Blackburn’s backline caught high up the pitch, McAuley released Luis Longstaff in behind but as defenders recovered and the ‘keeper came out the No.11 dragged his low shot wide of the right post.

Jones was then disappointed to send a header too easily into the hands of Ben Winterbottom after Tagseth had played Adam Lewis through along the left and the full-back curled in an inviting cross.

Perhaps the finest opening to that point came nine minutes before the interval.

Jones led a Liverpool breakaway and had options to the left, right and through the middle as he reached the box, eventually choosing the latter.

That meant another sight of goal for Longstaff, who was thwarted by Winterbottom as he sought to dink a finish into the net.

Nevertheless, the Reds finally broke the deadlock within seconds.

A neat spin at the right corner of the area by McAuley was followed up by a shot that struck a defender and rolled into the path of Tagseth for an unerring sweep across the ‘keeper and into the bottom corner.

And four minutes into the second half, midfielder Coyle increased the lead for Liverpool with a second goal in eight days.

Longstaff won possession deep in Rovers territory, ran through to meet Jones’ pass and maintained his balance to square for his teammate to enjoy a simple tap-in.

Blackburn responded within six minutes through Butterworth, who was afforded too much time to dribble into a shooting position and smack a fine effort off the inside of the left post and in.

But Gerrard’s charges shrugged off the concession and set about restoring a cushion, which they did at the three-quarter mark of the contest.

A rapid counter-attack was prompted by the influential Tagseth and he waited patiently for the right time to set up an unmarked McAuley to his left – and the rest was never in doubt.

Back came Rovers, however, and when a short corner was recycled into the box, Lynch was clinical in controlling and lashing an angled shot into the far side of the net.

And the Reds were indebted to the woodwork in the closing moments, with first Callum Wright and then Butterworth on the rebound hitting either post, meaning an ultimately hard-fought victory for the hosts.

Liverpool U18s: Atherton, Hunter, Lewis, R Williams, Glennon, Coyle, Sharif (Millar, 59), Tagseth (Camacho, 80), McAuley (Simmonds, 71), Jones, Longstaff. Unused substitutes: Jaros, Lattie.

Ten-man U18s denied in stoppage time

Ten-man Liverpool U18s were denied all three points by an injury-time equaliser in a pulsating 2-2 draw with Manchester United on Saturday.

Steven Gerrard’s team went into the U18 Premier League clash at a snowy, icy Cliff unbeaten this season - but that record was under serious threat when Adam Lewis was sent off in the 27th minute after D’Mani Mellor’s early opener for United.

But the young Reds battled their way to half-time without conceding a second and surged into the lead early in the second period thanks to quickfire goals from Liam Millar and Glen McAuley.

Unsurprisingly, United’s full complement dominated possession and territory in the final stages but stoic and diligent defending from the visitors appeared to have kept them at bay.

However, Arnau Puigmal’s 94th-minute leveller earned a share of the spoils for the hosts, who remain a point clear of fourth-placed Liverpool, albeit having played a game more than Gerrard’s side.

United adapted to the wintery conditions quickly and deservedly took an early lead through Mellor, with the forward latching onto a long ball and rounding Viteslav Jaros before finishing.

Jaros prevented George Tanner from making it 2-0 almost immediately when he got down well to palm the full-back’s low header away, and Gerrard opted to make a tactical switch inside the opening 20 minutes in a bid to earn his side a foothold in the game.

McAuley’s introduction did just that, with Millar and Curtis Jones both having sights of goal soon after, but Lewis’ dismissal - brought about by a second booking for a mistimed challenge on Tahith Chong - checked the young Reds’ progress.

Jaros then denied James Garner and Chong in quick succession as United sought to make their numerical advantage show on the scoreboard, but Liverpool got to the break with no further damage done.

And, amid blizzard-like snowfall, Millar and McAuley had turned the contest on its head by the hour mark.

First, an example of high-pressing straight from Jьrgen Klopp’s coaching manual led by McAuley and Edvard Tagseth forced a loose defensive pass that was seized upon by Jones.

The young Scouser showed quick feet to evade his marker and sent a low ball across to Millar, who dipped inside onto his right foot and rifled his 13th goal of the season high into the net.

Then, just nine minutes later, Millar turned provider as he collected Anthony Glennon’s clever reverse pass, raced down the left and squared for McAuley to convert from close range.

Liverpool then sat deep and looked to hit United on the break, with Jones and substitutes Paul Glatzel and Yasser Larouci all missing chances to make it 3-1 before Puigmal reacted rapidly to Jaros’ parry to equalise with just seconds remaining.

Liverpool: Jaros, Sharif, Williams, Clayton, Lewis, Glennon, Tagseth, Dixon-Bonner, Camacho (McAuley (Glatzel)), Jones, Millar (Larouci).
  Unused subs: Atherton, Boyes.

Late Lewis winner takes U18s into top spot

Adam Lewis scored a stunning winner two minutes from time as Liverpool moved top of the U18s Premier League with a 2-1 victory at Wolves on Tuesday afternoon.

Steven Gerrard's side went behind to an unstoppable strike from Dan McKenna in the 81st minute, but Glen McAuley levelled the scores soon after before Lewis drilled home to claim the three points.

The comeback preserves the U18s' unbeaten start to the season while taking them a point ahead of Manchester City at the top of the division.

Both sides had their chances in a lively opening 45 minutes. Rafael Camacho hit the bar with a superb effort, while at the other end Reds stopper Viteslav Jaros made a brilliant point-blank save to deny Brad Carr.

Curtis Jones, who always looked capable of making something happen in the final third, was next to go close for the Reds on 27 minutes when a solo run was ended with his shot being kept out by Jackson Smith.

After a goalless opening half, Gerrard's charges started the second period strongly.

Elijah Dixon-Bonner's fierce drive from the edge of the box looked destined for the top corner before Smith kept it out with a superb save.

Camacho then had a goal disallowed when he met a cross from Lewis, with his celebrations cut short by the offside flag.

On 65 minutes the home side went close. A surging run down the right flank from Ryan Giles saw his low cross just miss the lurking Austin Samuels in the middle of the penalty area.

A minute later, Millar had a great chance for the Reds but fired wide from a good position after excellent approach play from Lewis.

Both sides continued to look dangerous on the counter-attack as the game wore on. Jaros made a brilliant save to keep out a fierce drive from Giles before the home side opening the scoring on 81 minutes.

Luis Longstaff lost possession on the edge of his own penalty area and, when the ball found McKenna, the Wolves skipper drilled into the roof of the net.

  Thankfully, Liverpool's response was outstanding.

On 84 minutes, Jones lofted a ball in from the right flank and McAuley produced a superb instinctive finish to divert the ball into the top corner of the net.

And, with two minutes remaining, Millar cut inside from the right, beat three defenders and, from his cut-back, Lewis fired home an unstoppable left-footed drive to seal a dramatic victory.

Liverpool U18s: Jaros, Larouci (Longstaff), Lewis, R Williams, Boyes, Clayton, Tagseth, Dixon-Bonner, Millar (Sharif), Jones, Camacho (McAuley).

Millar nets a treble as U18s hit five at Hartlepool United

Liam Millar netted a hat-trick as Liverpool U18s reached the fourth round of the FA Youth Cup with a 5-1 win away at Hartlepool United on Wednesday night.

Steven Gerrard's side played some fantastic football at Victoria Park and thoroughly deserved their victory in this third-round tie.

Millar took his tally to 16 goals for the season, and Glen McAuley and Curtis Jones were also on the mark.

Following his sending-off at the weekend against Manchester United the Reds were without the suspended Adam Lewis, so Welsh youth international Morgan Boyes made only his second start of the campaign after returning from injury and there was a first start for Yasser Larouci.

Reflecting on the victory, Gerrard told Liverpoolfc.com: "Everyone knows what the FA Cup is about and it's the same at Youth Cup level as well, and this was the biggest game of the Hartlepool lads' lives.

"To be fair, they made it a contest. We started the game brightly and took the lead but then we got caught by a sucker punch. They played a diagonal ball into their big centre-forward and we never dealt with the second ball for their equaliser, so that is a big learning curve for us.

"From then on we completely dominated the proceedings and in the end we had too much energy, class and quality.

"We ran them into the ground in the last 20 minutes and passed them off the pitch, and the scoreline could have been even more convincing but we thoroughly deserved the win in the end."

PGerrard also had words of praise for 18-year-old Millar, who notched his second hat-trick of the season.

He added: "Liam was electric tonight. His all-round game was quality.

"I've seen Liam play this season, score goals but still be a little bit loose in his play, but tonight his performance was on the money.

"His movement was excellent, he was sharp, he kept the ball for us, never stopped working and looked a threat."

Liverpool U18s: Jaros, Larouci, Boyes (Sharif, 60), R Williams, Glennon, Clayton, Tagseth, Dixon-Bonner, McAuley (Longstaff, 65), Jones, Millar (Simmonds, 75).

Lewis nets a double as U18s march on in Premier League Cup

Adam Lewis came off the bench to score twice as Liverpool U18s marched through to the quarter-finals of the Premier League Cup after a 3-2 win over Sunderland on Saturday.

Going into the game at the Kirkby Academy, Steven Gerrard was without key performers like Liam Millar, Glen McAuley, Rhys Williams and Paul Glatzel, while Lewis was only able to make the bench.

Sunderland took the lead through Lee Connelly but the young Reds responded after the half-time break when Lewis drilled home an unstoppable effort to make it 1-1.

Rafael Camacho then pounced to make it 2-1 after superb work from Edvard Tagseth, before the young Black Cats drew level at 2-2 through Connelly again.

With time almost up, Camacho was sent tumbling by Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson, and Lewis made no mistake with a penalty to seal a 3-2 win.

Reflecting on the victory, Gerrard told Liverpoolfc.com: “In the first half we didn’t turn up really but I sort of challenged them at half-time and told them they weren’t good enough and we needed more from them.

“They delivered in the second half. Adam [Lewis] coming on from the bench changed the game for us and also Niall Brookwell on his U18s debut came on for the last 35 minutes and was excellent.

“We had four players not available for us today because of illness and we’ve got a few injuries as well, so we were eight or nine players down, but it was an opportunity for other people to stake a claim.

“Overall a good result and a good performance in the second half but we weren’t at the races in the first.

“I’ve said to the lads can we beat Hartlepool United now in the FA Youth Cup third round and then we will have three cups to look forward to.

“Our focus now turns to the U19 game with Spartak Moscow in the UEFA Youth League on Wednesday and hopefully we can get a positive result in our final group game.”

Liverpool U19s rounded off their UEFA Youth League group-stage campaign with a comfortable 2-0 win over Spartak Moscow.

Steven Gerrard’s side went into Wednesday’s match having already secured top spot in Group E after last month’s 4-0 victory over Sevilla, but the manager named a strong starting XI at Prenton Park.

And, with the likes of Ben Woodburn, Rhian Brewster and Curtis Jones all in fine form, the young Reds simply had too much quality for a visiting team who won the reverse fixture in Moscow 2-1.

Jones produced a moment of real class to give Liverpool the lead in the 13th minute and then turned provider as George Johnston converted the midfielder’s corner shortly after the half-hour mark.

Kamil Grabara twice thwarted Aleksandr Rudenko as Spartak sought a response after the break, but the end result was never in danger as the young Reds posted a final points tally of 15 from their six games.

Woodburn nearly put Liverpool ahead inside the opening 14 seconds, but they didn’t have to wait too much longer to see their imposing start rewarded as Jones registered his 12th goal of an impressive season.

The young Scouser played a swift one-two with Conor Masterson on the edge of the Spartak area, drifted past a defender with ease and beat goalkeeper Aleksandr Maksimenko with a left-footed effort from an acute angle.

Gerrard’s team were in no mood to let their early intent subside.

Brewster tested Maksimenko with a free-kick from distance before Johnston doubled their advantage. Jones was again involved with his corner flicked on at the near post to Johnston, who finished acrobatically.

A third was almost forthcoming before the interval when Brewster produced a moment of individual brilliance before being denied by Maksimenko, and only some desperate defending prevented the striker from netting 10 minutes into the second period after unselfish work from Bobby Adekanye.

Liverpool’s dominance had rendered Grabara a near spectator throughout, but the 'keeper had to be alert twice in quick succession to prevent Rudenko from pulling a goal back.

Captain Woodburn then saw a late effort saved by Maksimenko, but that mattered little with Gerrard and his players now able to look forward to February's draw for the last 16.

Liverpool: Grabara, Camacho, Johnston, Masterson, Lewis, Clayton, Kane (Tagseth), Jones (Millar), Woodburn, Adekanye (Dixon-Bonner), Brewster.
Unused subs: Jaros, Sharif, Glennon, Glatzel.
