Liverpool crushed the Basques'
resistance with an overwhelmingly convincing performance. The Reds were superior in all
departments to a side unbeaten in home League games for more than two years, but the key
area was midfield, where Keegan and Callaghan sparkled. Heighway's pace had the Spaniards
struggling, too, and he might have scored four times in the opening 25 minutes. In fact,
he found the net just once, rounding a defender and placing a firm shot wide of the
'keeper. Liverpool continued to dominate, only the woodwork and inaccurate marksmanship
denying them a winning lead before half-time. The second period was more productive,
however, Callaghan netting from a narrow angle after Toshack had headed against the angle
of bar and post, and Thompson nodding home from a corner. Amas's late strike for Real was
mere consolation. |
