  Notes:

  - Brighton became the second club to knock Liverpool out of the FA Cup in successive seasons. The first was Everton in 1905 and 1906.

Brighton, who popped up with the season's shock result by winning at Anfield in the FA Cup, went close to repeating that victory in their desperate search for points to avoid relegation.

They were two goals ahead with just 14 minutes on the clock when Ian Rush stepped in to bring Brighton crashing back to earth.

Rush pulled back goal No 1 after Phil Neal's shot was blocked by Stevens and goalkeeper Moseley, then repeated the dose - his 29th goal of the season - when he finished off a lobbed pass from Kenny Dalglish four minutes from the end.

But this was hardly a performance of merit from Liverpool, who were without Graeme Souness and David Hodgson before losing the injured Phil Thompson at half time.

Liverpool had the ball in the net with only three minutes gone, but Rush was ruled offside. Two minutes later Brighton were in front.

Grealish unleashed a superb pass for Robinson on the left and the striker chested down the ball before thumping it past Grobbelaar.

The South Coast side increased that lead with 21 minutes gone when Smillie had a shot blocked and Smith headed back into the crowded penalty area for Howlett to add the final touch.

Smith, ironically, turned out to be the villian for a Brighton team anxious for survival points.

He scorned another acceptable chance to put the Reds in real trouble early in the second half, then with the score at 2-1 and only minutes remaining he shot wide from ten yards out after Robinson's header left him with Grobbelaar to beat.
