Notes:
- Phil Neal missed a penalty on 72'
- Liverpool had gone 63 home cup matches without defeat. Their last defeat had been
against Middlesbrough in the fourth round of the League Cup on 12 November 1974!
- Brighton's caretaker manager was Jimmy Melia - an ex-Red. Another former Red,
Jimmy Case, scored the winning goal for Brighton in the match!
- Dr. Robin Gowers writes: "This was the club's first ever match at Anfield on
a Sunday. This had nothing to do with it being on tv. In the previous round of the cup
both Everton and Liverpool were drawn at home - Everton moved their match to the Sunday.
In the 5th round the same happened again - Everton requested to play on the Sunday again
but their opponents (Tottenham) refused - so Liverpool had the Sunday match. At the time
of the game Liverpool were well ahead at the top of the First Division, whilst Brighton
were on the bottom. In the image attached below is a a scan of the team sheet handed to
all fans going into the ground. At the time The Sunday Observance Act (1780) prohibited
admission to a building on a Sunday for payment. Clubs got around this by allowing free
admittance to their ground as payment for such team sheets." |
