  - Mini Tournament

  - Feyenoord used away kits: low yellow shirt & yellow shorts & yellow socks.

Over one hundred thousand supporters had gathered for the two nights of the tournament, and more than anything they wanted to see a glimpse of the vintage Johann Cruyff.

The Dutch master, who had left Feyenoord's great rivals Ajax, duly obliged against the Reds with a dozen reminders of his balance, grace and skill.

With only 8 minutes gone he twisted past three Liverpool defenders to open the scoring with a low shot from 15 yards, and on three orfour occasions he released colleagues with remarkably accurate passes.

Liverpool were determined not to play second fiddle though. A lovely move down the right ended with Mark Lawrenson striking a post with a shot which rebounded into the net off the back of the Feyennord goalkeeper.

The Eire international was enjoying a licence to attack from midfield and added another just after the break to wipe out Vermeulen's goal on the stroke of half-time.

But when Phil Neal conceded a penalty, Peter Houtman restored Feyenoord's lead from the spot. Kenny Dalglish not only grabbed the equaliser after 69 minutes, he had a last-minute winner mysteriously disallowed.

The less said about Liverpool's second penalty shoot-out defeat the better. Phil Neal's trusty right-boot did the trick again, but Steve Nicol and Alan Kennedy were less successful, and although Bruce Grobbelaar was ready to join Graeme Souness in the spot-kick team, Feyenoord were already too far in front thanks to Been, Duut, Houtman and Wijnstekers.
