City Buried
A Ronnie Whelan hat-trick sent Liverpool further towards the League title and
Coventry closer to the Second Division.
Brilliantly directed by Kenny Dalglish, Liverpool buried City even before half-time
with midfield man Whelan then adding late-on the third goal after his two in the first
half. By half-time City, who had managed only one real shot - from Nick Pickering - were
not only trailing by those two Whelan goals but should have been further behind.
The others inevitably came along. There was Molby getting one in the 46th minute,
Ian Rush after two earlier misses getting the fourth in the 78th minute and Whelan
flinging arms high as he made it a hat-trick in the 83rd.
And all down to the brilliant creative work especially in the first half of
player-manager Dalglish.
It took 20 minutes, two near misses by Jan Molby and some distinguished play from
Kenny Dalglish before Liverpool scored.
Then Ronnie Whelan twice strode through inside six minutes to send the Anfield club
on its way.
Dalglish had set up Steve Nicol, whose perfect through ball ripped Coventry apart
for Whelan to net. Any off-side suspicions were offset by the Liverpool second goal, which
came soon after the referee had been called to the touch line by a linesman and spoke to
the Coventry bench.
Whelan's second goal came in similar spectacular fashion. The midfield man placed
the ball past Coventry keeper Steve Ogrizovic as he advanced out. Jim Beglin had set up
the move.
Ian Rush, back in action after sustaining a heavy knock, should have scored
Liverpool's third goal long before it came. But first he put wide and the second occasion
Ogrizovic came out to block his shot.
Coventry had been able to test Liverpool's keeper, Bruce Grobbelaar with only one
real shot from Nick Pickering before Molby scored Liverpool's third in the 46th minute,
the ball being deflected.
A packed house of 42,729 had seen a match dominated by Liverpool with unhappy City
able to offer so little in return.
