     Dalglish downhearted

  The glum expression on the face of Liverpool player-manager Kenny Dalglish told it all. He limped out of the Liverpool dressing room with four stitches in a nasty cut on his knee and is certainly out of tomorrow's match with Ipswich at Anfield.

  He was clearly downhearted and it seemed to require a major physical effort to speak when asked about the game. Someone inquired whether anyone else was injured - "only their pride" came the terse reply.

  But then he added: "We were second best on the day, but I didn't think we deserved to lose. I thought we would get a point. But then again Newcastle certainly did not deserve to lose. We are not too happy about our performance as you might expect but we have to take each game as it comes and we must start all over again on Monday. I have no idea when I will be fit".

  Skipper Phil Neal was just as downhearted. He said: "We deserved what we got because we were altogether far too slow and not up to our usual standard....".

  In sharp contrast Newcastle caretaker manager, Willie McFaul, was the happiest man for miles around. He said: "I am happy for the team and I am happy for the supporters, I am happy for me and in fact I am just plain happy".

  Liverpool tasted the rapid improvement which is emerging in this Newcastle side. Newcastle were so tight that goal-scoring machine Ian Rush had only one goal-scoring chance in the whole game and, perhaps through sheer excitement when it arrived, he made the rare mistake of miskicking the ball.

  Throughout the first half Liverpool were restricted to two shots one of which came from Steve Nicol and was turned round the post by Martin Thomas, and the other was a powerful effort by Jim Beglin which went wide.

  Dalglish limped off after 31 minutes, but substitute Craig Johnston soon became Liverpool's busiest player with plenty of hard running. Even so Newcastle kept up the pressure well into the second half with Peter Beardsley absolutely outstanding as every Liverpool player will certainly be quick to testify. Beardsley did everything McFaul wanted in his attacking policy.

  It was his amazing cross from one side of the field to the other which started Newcastle's precious move for the winning goal after 68 minutes. Neil McDonald raced on to the ball and crossed it into the goalmouth. Bruce Grobbelaar and George Reilly went for it together but it was the blond Newcastle striker who got there by a whisker to head it into the net.

  So what an amazing start for Willie McFaul. The genial Irishman, thrust in at the deep end when Jack Charlton dramatically walked out one week before the season started, really has got this team buzzing. This may have been their first win of the season, but they are still unbeaten, and it was against one of the best sides in the First Division. He was a very happy man last night.
