Magic
Ronnie!
Two magical curling shots from Ronnie Whelan left Liverpool's 27,000 fans
spellbound at Anfield last night. He shattered dogged Forest just when it seemed they
might defy Liverpool's ruthless domination.
Whelan produced his first stunning goal in the 56th-minute. Forest 'keeper Hans
Segers, who had frustrated Liverpool brilliantly until then, tried to find one of his men
with a risky throw out of his box. But it fell at Whelan's feet more than 35 yards out.
The Republic of Ireland international pounced in a flash to send an amazing shot curling
over the startled Segers, the ball dipping just under the bar.
Twelve minutes later Whelan struck another gem - a replica of that unforgettable
goal he scored against Manchester United in the Milk Cup Final three seasons ago. Mark
Lawrenson had made a great run before finding Whelan who curled a superb right foot shot
round the groping Segers from just inside the box.
It was tough for Segers. For he produced a string of great saves - none finer than
a one-handed tip over the bar from a fierce free-kick from Jan Molby. He saved Forest
again in the 60th-minute, by touching a drive from Steve Nicol on to the post and out for
a corner.
But he produced the save of the night midway through the second half when he leapt
high to turn an Ian Rush header over for a corner after Nicol had centred perfectly.
