PROFILE
Louis Bimpson was joint top-scorer for Liverpool in 1953-4, and that season he scored all
four goals against Burnley at Anfield, all the goals coming in the first half. But this
flourish was an isolated outburst from the big, strong centre-forward. He was always an
energetic trier who gave 100 per cent, but had too many short-comings to be a truly class
player, despite all the faith Liverpool showed in him. He joined them from Burscough and
made his League debut in March 1953, scoring three goals in eight games that season. He
could never command a regular place, however, and after reaching his personal peak in
1953-4, he did not play more than half the games in any one season. His 11 goals in 15
appearances in 1958-9 proved a futile gesture, for Liverpool replaced him with Dave
Hickson. Yet for all that, Bimpson's career record of 40 goals in 100 League and Cup games
for the Reds compares favourably with most other Liverpool forwards of the same period,
Liddell excepted. Bimpson signed for Blackburn in November 1959 and later played for
Bournemouth, Rochdale and Wigan.
