  PROFILE

Liverpool secured the record signing of England striker Andy Carroll from Newcastle United on January 31, 2011.

Carroll is one of the rising stars of the Barclays Premier League.

The 22-year-old followed in the footsteps of legendary striker Alan Shearer by becoming a hero at St James' Park as the Toon Army took him to their hearts.

Formidable in the air and a real presence in attack, Carroll will be relishing the move to Anfield and a potentially deadly new partnership with Luis Suarez.

Liverpool's scouts were already aware of his abilities having seen him at close hand during the FA Youth Cup semi-final in March 2007. Although Newcastle were well beaten, Carroll scored in the first leg at St James' Park and was a real handful throughout.

Liverpool and Newcastle legend Kevin Keegan once described Carroll as 'Probably in the top three headers of a ball I have ever seen in football.'

After graduating through the Newcastle Academy, he became Newcastle's youngest ever European debutant when he played against Palermo during a 1-0 UEFA Cup win in 2006, at the age of 17.

The striker scored his first senior goal against Juventus in a friendly on July 29, 2007. After the game the Juventus 'keeper Gianluigi Buffon tipped Carroll to have a big future.

He then fired his first league goal on his full home debut against West Ham on January 10, 2009.

Despite Newcastle's relegation from the top flight in 2008-09, they made an instant return after a Carroll inspired season in the Championship. Defences were sick of the sight of this marauding striker as he hit 19 goals.

Carroll was also recognised by his peers when he was included in the PFA Championship Team of the Year.

At the start of the 2010-11 season he was given a major confidence boost when he was handed Alan Shearer's famous No.9 shirt in Tyneside.

He soon began to do it justice when he netted his first senior hat-trick for Newcastle in their 6-0 thrashing of Aston Villa on August 22, 2010.

His performances hadn't gone unnoticed at international level either and Fabio Capello couldn't hold him back any longer as he made his England debut wearing the No.9 shirt v France on November 17, 2010.

It was hardly a classic display from Capello's team but the performance of Carroll certainly gave the international team a bright hope for the future.
