PROFILE
Right winger Jermaine Pennant became Rafael Benitez's fifth signing of summer 2006
when he swooped to capture the 23-year-old from Birmingham City.
A boyhood Liverpool fan, Pennant has always enjoyed good games against the Reds in
the past, and he is a player with great pace and a fine crosser of the ball from the right
hand side. According to the OPTA stats from the 2005/2006 season Pennant put more inviting
crosses into the opposition penalty area than any other winger.
He first sprung to prominence when Arsenal signed him from Notts County for 2
million pounds when he was just 15 in 1999. He went on to score a hat-trick on his
Premiership debut against Southampton in May 2003.
However, Pennant couldn't hold down a regular place in Arsene Wenger's first team
and he had loan spells with Watford and then Leeds United.
He then joined Birmingham City in January 2005 on an initial loan spell from
Arsenal before making the move permanent in that summer ahead of the 2005/2006 season.
Jermaine has been given squad number 16 which was previously worn by Didi Hamann.
