  Notes:

  - Dinamo used home kits: shirt with black (right side) & yellow (left side) vertical stripe & black shorts & black socks with yellow top.

  - Alan Hansen scores his first goal for LFC.

  - Hansen describes his goal: "I scored with a header early in the first half but I didn't know too much about it at the time. John Toshack flicked on a corner and I got my head to it. I'd actually tried to flick it to the goalkeeper's right but it went to his left. The main thing was it went in."

Liverpool played exceedingly well and took their chances with aplomb, yet the feeling persisted that Dresden were a better team than the scoreline indicated. The principal difference between the two protagonists was Toshack, who failed to find the net himself but had a hand - or rather a head - in three goals. His first significant contribution was a delicate glance across goal from a corner that Hansen headed powerfully home for the opener. Next, the Welshman flicked the ball to Case, who nodded in the second, then he headed down for Kennedy to knock in the fifth. In between, Neal scored a penalty after Dalglish had been fouled and Case thrashed in a 30-yarder. Dynamo's late reply, dispatched neatly by Hafner, inspired further German raids, leaving Liverpool distinctly thankful for their comfortable lead.

League favourites Liverpool were totally in control for the first half hour and they deservedly took the lead in the 29th minute through David Fairclough, indeed City were lucky to go into the break with just a one goal deficit.

15 minutes into the second half Brian Kidd fired home the equaliser, after a move involving Peter Barnes and Mick Channon, and it was Channon who put the Blues ahead. latching on to an defence splitting ball from Dave Watson and beating Clemence with a left foot drive.
With minutes to go Joe Royle was set up by Peter Barnes to score the third.

  Notes:

  - Dinamo used home kits: yellow shirt with short black vertical stripe (left side) & black shorts & black socks with yellow top.

The suspicion that Dynamo might be wolves in lambs' clothing was borne out by a spirited display. From the off, the Reds sought to preserve their hefty first-leg advantage, and Clemence found himself in frequent action. With the scoresheet blank at the break, it seemed that Liverpool were safe, but a swift double-strike changed all that. First Dorner's free-kick was deflected to Kotte, who scored from close range; then Sachse headed in a Hafner cross. Now Liverpool were wobbling, and had the home side accepted either of two further presentable chances, then a sensation was clearly possible. In their moment of greatest danger, however, the Reds responded like true champions. Substitute Fairclough broke free on the left, his centre caused confusion in the Dresden ranks and Heighway stabbed the ball home. Suddenly, it was all over.

    Not so super

Liverpool are on the threshold of winning the European Super Cup without convincing anyone that a cure for uneasy form at home is within sight. All they have to do to confirm themselves as Europe's leading team is to win the return leg at Anfield in a fortnight to add more silverware to their trophy room. But few who saw the performance here last night against the holders of the Cup-Winners Cup will believe all is well again.

After a first half in which their anxiety was plain for all to see, Liverpool became more assured. But the poor quality of opposition must be borne into mind in making any assessment of last season's double champions. Hamburg, even with Kevin Keegan in the mood if not the form to make an impact against his old colleagues, were unbelievably moderate for a team who hold one of Europe's major prizes.

At the final whistle, the crowd in the stands hurled their cushions as an illustration of their feelings about the team's performance. The gesture will not be lost on Liverpool manager Bob Paisley and his men. Both teams' failure to make an impact in their domestic leagues after achieving European glory was reflected in the first half. If anything, Hamburg's anxiety was more conspicuous. Liverpool, knowing they had a home game to come, could be more unhurried. Their patience was scarcely noticeable when chances were offered. Nobody seem capable of keeping shots down, with Jimmy Case, Ray Kennedy, and David Fairclough particularly guilty.

Ferdinand Keller was assertive and aggressive in the Hamburg attack, twice heading the ball expertly in dangerous situations before releasing a drive of awesome power to leave Ray Clemence stranded after 29 minutes. The build up to the goal was no more threatening than other earlier, but when Klaus Zaczyk struck the ball low into an unguarded spot on the 18-yard line, Keller met it with an explosive shot. Three minutes later Liverpool lost left-back Joey Jones because of injury and he was replaced by Tommy Smith.

Liverpool remained watchful and cautious until half time, when I imagine manager Paisley had a few words to say about the need to be more positive with chances. The repeated misplacement of passes that had been an unacceptable feature of the first half continued after the interval. After Fairclough had cut through cleverly on the left, he finished tamely. Liverpool used their second substitute with David Johnson replacing Jimmy Case. But the substitution Liverpool profited from most was made by Hamburg. After 65 minutes Horst Bertl's first touch of the ball was a header from Kenny Dalglish's cross which left goalkeeper Stars stranded and Fairclough zoomed in at the far post to head the equaliser. After Stars had dived to save from Dalglish, Clemence needed to be even more alert to prevent Arno Steffenhagen from restoring Hamburg's lead.

Liverpool manager Bob Paisley said "In the end, I was quite pleased. It was an encouraging performance. But I do not rate Hamburg and I did not rate them when we played them in August in a pre-season friendly".

Kevin Keegan said afterwards "We were pathetic. The last two weeks we have played well but we were terrible tonight. Liverpool played quite well and got better as the game went on. I have mixed feelings about my return to Anfield now. If we had a 5-0 lead I would have loved it. I am still looking forward to it, but not so much".

  - Terry McDermott says his hat-trick was the turning point in his Liverpool career: "Someone was injured, I think it may have been Ian Callaghan. I was moved in rather than be out wide on the right. I scored a hat-trick and I always remember John Toshack saying: 'That's your position'. I got the confidence from John Toshack saying a thing like that. He probably won't remember, but I do."

    It's that old Anfield Magic!

Twenty-one minutes had gone before Hamburg's defence was breached. Phil Thompson advanced for a corner by Steve Heighway, was foiled as he tried to head the ball, but as it dropped at his feet he hooked it in off a post. Thompson, who scored his first goal of the season only on Saturday after missing the double triumph of last season, joined in every attack looking for another. He was not involved, though, in the second goal after 29 minutes. That honour belonged exclusively to Ray Kennedy, who made it, and McDermott, who scored it. When Kennedy cleverly played the ball into space, McDermott moved on to it, smartly controlled it with one foot, and drove it viciously wide of goalkeeper Kargus with the other.

Liverpool, who replaced Heighway with David Johnson at half time, scored twice more in a minute - both by McDermott. He intercepted a misdirected pass to strike a wicked 20-yard drive past Kargus after 56 minutes and completed his hat-trick with a cleverly placed shot. Hamburg, now under siege, were lucky to escape further punishment as attacks poured in, but succumbed twice more in the closing minutes. Four minutes from time, David Fairclough headed the fifth goal and, two minutes later, Kenny Dalglish drove in the sixth. There was no consolation for Hamburg, who could hardly have complained if Liverpool had run up a cricket score.

Kevin Keegan said "I was disappointed from out point of view because we were diabolical. From what I had heard about Liverpool I did not think they would play that well. I did not see much wrong with them from where I was watching. There were no cracks and, if anything, they are stronger than ever. We are not that bad but it was 6-0 and could have been more".

The final scoreline looks comfortable in this one but it's not a reflection on the game itself. Boro had tonnes of chances in this one which included an open goal but they proceeded to miss them all.

The goals came in each half for the Reds. David Johnson headed home shortly before half time when he finished off a great cross from Steve Heighway.

Late in the second half Ray kennedy sent Heighway clear and he shot home having left Craggs behind.

Liverpool revealed all their ruthless efficiency and strength of character to overturn a Benfica side that had not been beaten for 46 games. On a filthy night when torrential rain turned the pitch into a swamp, the Reds showed the greater appetite for the fray and their comeback from a goal down must rank as one of their most valiant European achievements. The slick Portuguese went ahead when Nene sprinted on to a long clearance, outstripped the chasing defenders and beat the advancing Clemence with a precise shot. Liverpool refused to buckle, however, and equalised when Case netted with a free-kick from the edge of the box. Benfica poured into attack as the second half commenced, but Smith and company held firm and the Eagles became flustered. Then it was Liverpool's turn to advance, and Hughes secured a precious lead with a speculative floater from the left flank.

Graeme Souness hadn't been registered in time for this tie but the Reds still managed to win. A night of pouring rain saw the Reds go behind after fourteen minutes but the Reds didn't panic and scored twice in either half. Jimmy Case scored the first as his free kick wasn't held in the wet conditions by the Benfica Keeper. Hughes scored the second with a perfect lob over the stranded Bento.

It was a scrappy, unsatisfying game, but that hardly mattered to the Reds as they eclipsed the famous Benfica to reach the semi-finals. The outcome was beyond reasonable doubt early in the first half, after a Callaghan cross was deflected into the net, and Dalglish had seized on Toni's sloppy back-pass to score with a perfectly placed shot from just inside the area. Soon afterwards, however, the Portuguese were given the merest glimmer of hope when Case emulated Toni's carelessness and Nene reacted instantly to give Clemence no chance. Liverpool found better form in the second half but could not pierce the visitors' rearguard until near the end. Then they scored twice, 'keeper Bento failing to stop a McDermott drive from crossing the line, then watching bemused as Neal netted with a fierce cross-shot after McDermott had miskicked.

The Reds had two away goals behind them for this return leg and Benfica turned up expecting it to be confirmed with an easy win for the Reds. That was the resulting the end but neither side really broke sweat. As snow fell on the pitch Anfield turned white and Benfica turned pale too. Two early goals and two late ones ensured the Reds were comfortable on the night.

  Notes:

  - Numbers Steve Ogrizovic, Joey Jones and David Fairclough which was on Liverpool bench in this match can other.

  - Legend Ian Callaghan plays his record 857th game for Liverpool, which proves to be his last for the Reds.

A cautious encounter, which for most of its duration would have satisfied connoisseurs of tactics but frustrated seekers after thrills, erupted into stunning action in the closing minutes.

Until then, as the two sides probed each other for weaknesses without committing themselves to all-out attack, defences had reigned largely supreme. As expected of the hosts, Borussia enjoyed the better of the first half, but all they had to show for it was one strike from Hannes, who swept home a crashing ten-yarder following a corner. Liverpool began to assert themselves after the interval, and both McDermott and Case went close, although Heynckes hit the post for the Germans. With two minutes left, the Reds grabbed a precious away goal when Johnson dived ahead of Vogts to nod into the net. However, retaliation was instant. Bonhof pierced the Reds' defensive wall with a 22-yard free-kick of fearsome force, the ball grazing the shoulder of the startled Clemence on its way into the net. Even so, Liverpool were not unhappy with their night's work.

The Reds were drawn against the side they had beaten the previous season in the final and knew this one would be hard. Times seemed so different to the year before. The Germans had got stronger whilst the Reds had stuttered their way through the season. Hannes gave the German side the lead just before the half hour and it looked like it was going to be enough on the night to win. Although the Reds were to go on and lose the tie they hit a crucial away goal two minutes from time. At the time Johnson's goal was an equaliser but the Reds conceded straight after. The away goal though did everything to the morale of the Reds. A 1-0 win at Anfield would see them through.

  Notes:

  - Numbers players which was on Liverpool bench in this match can was other.

Arguably it was Liverpool's performance of the season; certainly il was one of their most convincing in 14 European campaigns. They brushed aside the powerful Germans, who appeared awestruck at the volume attained by the Kop choir, to reach the final with something to spare. The Reds wasted little time in wiping out the one-goal first-leg deficit. The increasingly influential Souness freed Dalglish on the right, the striker delivered a delightful curling cross and Kennedy planted a firm header beyond the reach of 'keeper Kleff. Thus encouraged, Liverpool refused to relax their grip and scored again before the break, Kennedy heading a Heighway cross to Dalglish, who squeezed his volley just inside a post. Borussia regrouped at half-time and menaced briefly, but their resistance was crushed finally when Kennedy found Case, who cut past a defender before thrashing the ball high into goal. Thereafter the visitors had little relish for their work, and seemed relieved when the final whistle ended their ordeal.

Graeme Souness made his firs European start after impressing as a sub in the first leg of this tie. He was an inspired choice for the Reds as they swept past the German side. The Reds were a goal up and effectively in a winning position after just six minutes of the game as Ray Kennedy converted a Dalglish cross. The two reversed fortunes on thirty four minutes and the tie was all over really. A goal for the German side would have drawn it all square but it never looked on the cards in this one. Nine minutes into the second half Jimmy Case thundered a shot past Kieff to seal the tie and send the Reds on a trip down to Wembley and FC Bruges.

  - Numbers players which was on Liverpool bench in this match can was other.

LIVERPOOL, mighty and magnificent, confirmed themselves as European champions at Wembley last night, although they could manage only one Kenny Dalglish goal to emphasise their entitlement of the crown.

Scenes of tremendous jubilation among the Liverpool-dominated Wembley crowd were accompanied by rapturous scenes on the field with players hugging each other and dancing delight-edly as manager Bob Paisley joined his conquering heroes.

Trailing behind them towards the Royal Box were the dejected Belgians Bruges, who could hardly raise a gallop.

Emlyn Hughes and one of the heroes of the game, Graeme Sou-ness, emerged with the cup to begin a lap of honour, but soon Hughes joined McDermott in dancing his way to salute the fans who had supported them so magat Wembley nificently and so vociferously throughout the game. There was a sporting cheer, too, for the Belgians, as first they stopped to applaud Liverpool and then take their circuit of the stadium.

The scenes of jubilation surpassed those in Rome last year simply because nine-tenths of the crowd were sporting Liverpool favours. Liverpool not only made history by being the first British team to win the European Cup twice in succession but they did it in style and with authority.

It undoubtedly took Liverpool longer to crush the Belgian challenge than they had counted on, and in fact it was a tentative start with both teams eyeing each other with the suspicion of boxers embarking on 15 rounds.

It took 64 minutes before the crowd were able to let themselves go in salute of a Dalglish gem of a goal. It was a long time coming but well worthy of the wait.

One instinctively felt that this single breach in the Bruges wall would engulf them, and so it was, but not before Liverpool survived as hair-raising a moment as football can provide. They had been in the lead for only 15 minutes when a degree of hesitancy by Alan Hansen let in Sorensen. Clemence - what a magnificent reader of the game he is - ran out and deflected Sorensen's shot.

It went to Simoen, who fired at what seemed an open goal. Even as the ball was in the act of crossing the line at the foot of the post Phil Thompson swooped in to kick clear.

It was a horrifying moment, and a tremendous relief to young Hansen who had settled down from a tentative beginning to play like a Wembley veteran instead of the comparative novice he is.

Liverpool will look back on this night with undiluted joy and the 65th minute, when Kenny Dalglish's goal threatened to raise the roof, will never be forgotten.

It was Souness, with one of his multitude of delicate flicks, who found Terry McDermott, who never stopped running, out on the wing. A Dalglish overhead kick was pushed out by goalkeeper Jensen and from a Belgian point of view it could not have been a more ill-directed punch. The ball flew to Souness and another brilliant pass sent Dalglish racing on to the ball.

Although angled and covered by Jensen, Dalglish, with commendable calm, flipped the ball over the goalkeeper and into the net. It was a magnificent exhibition of the striker's art.

It was a remarkable coincidence that Dalglish - Keegan's successor - should make himself the hero of Wembley just as Keegan had put himself into the superstar category in Rome.

Despite the long delay for a goal, nobody could point an accusing finger at any of the Liverpool side. They were heroes all, and Bob Paisley's decision to include Fairclough for Heighway was amply justified by events.

Although the youngster's speed and enthusiasm often made him a ready victim for the offside trap, he was clearly one of the men Bruges earmarked as likely to give them most trouble.

Happily for everybody, the manager was able to fulfil his promise of introducing Heighway in the second half as replacement for Case, who had not by any means disappointed. Heighway had only been on the field one minute when Dalglish swooped and Heighway's contribution was such that Bruges were no doubt happy that they had to contend with him for less than half-an-hour. Case became the first booking of the match, but the score was evened up when van der Eycken's name followed in the book.

It was when it was beginning to appear that Liverpool had not enough tricks up their sleeve to shatter the defensive excellence of the team that had subdued Juventus that Case raised hopes when he blasted a free-kick through the wall for Jensen to make a tremendous save.

It may not have been the breakthrough but it marked Liverpool's appearance in the driving seat as they took total charge. Even so, there seemed then a lot of poetic licence in the Kop's chant "Why are we so great?"

Liverpool fired a warning shot across the bows when Souness cracked a tremendous shot only narrowly over the bar.

Three minutes before the interval, McDermott served Fair-clough like a waiter at a table, but Jensen flung himself at Fair-clough's feet as the youngster saw glory slip from his grasp.

Soon after half-time, Bruges were happy to kick clear after Fairclough had crossed to the front of goal with Case challenging. A groan that could probably be heard as far away as Mersey-side swept the ground in 49 minutes when a heaven-sent opportunity was presented to McDermott by Souness and Dalglish.

McDermott, racing into the clear, was faced only by the goal-keeper. Here was Rome seen unfolding again, with McDermott cast in the role of opening scorer. His shot was charged down by Jensen. It was a brilliant save but appreciation of the fact did nothing to reduce Liverpool's disappointment.

Bruges's challenges were few and far between and came mainly after Liverpool's goal but with only one goal in it, every advance was like a dagger thrust at the heart of Liverpool fans.

Still, in the end, there was no doubt that the team which had made all the play and over 90% of the attacks received the reward they had earned and can rightly rejoice in their title - European Champions.

LIVERPOOL: Clemence; Neal, Thompson, Hansen, Hughes; Case (Heighway 63), McDermott, Souness, Kennedy, Dalglish, Fairclough.

FC BRUGES: Jensen; Bastijns, Leekens, Krieger, Maes (Volders 70); Cools, van der Eycken, Ku (Sanders 60), de Cubber; Simoen, Sorensen.

  REFEREE: Mr Charles Corver (Holland)

  ATT: 92,000

MAN OF THE MATCH: Graeme Souness - A veritable box of tricks with his wide array of passing and subtle midfield manoeuvres, it was apt he should be the man to provide Liverpool's winner.

  - David Fairclough had to be replaced by Colin Irwin because of an injury sustained in the opening minutes. Sammy Lee was also a substitute in this match. Liverpool’s line-up was missing Graeme Souness and Kenny Dalglish, who had been called up by Scotland for the World Cup in Argentina.

  - Dubai welcomed the European champions to inaugurate Al Maktoum Stadium, the new home of Al Nasr. According to reports, ahead of kick off, the Dubai Defence Skydiving Team parachuted onto the field, landing in the centre circle. Ismail Al Baqri, chief of the sports section at Al Ahram newspaper praised the performance of Liverpool and, in particular, Ray Clemence. “[Liverpool’s] game is simple and fast, embedded in team spirit and without complications, entertaining the audience with technical moves,” Al Baqri wrote. “Though five goals were scored against Al Nasr, the team fought, sparing no effort. We shall not forget the alertness of the goalkeeper Clemence who stood strong as a dam, giving no chance to the attackers of Al Nasr.”
